The associate professor of the History of Medieval Art
oversees the field of study as a whole, the (Western) art history of approx.
300 to approx. 1500 AD (visual arts), and is specialized in one of its
subdisciplines. S/he is capable of connecting the chosen field of study to
other research disciplines and study programs in the area of arts and culture
within the Faculty of Humanities, e.g. history or cultural history. S/he is
willing to participate in the Center for Medieval Studies Amsterdam (CMSA) and
has a successful academic track record and reputation. Furthermore, the
candidate also possesses demonstrable leadership qualities and is willing to
take on administrative tasks and responsibilities.
The successful candidate will teach and develop
teaching activities both as part of and outside the programme of the Department
of Art History of the UvA. He or she will (help) supervise both bachelor and
master students. The candidate will independently conduct research in the areas
mentioned, resulting in contributions to leading international publications.
The candidate will be expected to raise funds for and be involved in
(international) research projects. The candidate will be responsible, together with
the professors in Art History, for a part of the administrative and managerial
duties within and outside the department of Art History.
The associate professor of History of Medieval Art
will be embedded in the department of Art, Religion and Cultural Sciences.
His/her research will be part of the Institute of Culture and History (ICH).
The Faculty’s Bachelor programs are overseen by the
College of Humanities. Masters and PhD education is overseen by the Graduate
School of Humanities.
Description
Candidates for the position are expected to meet the
following requirements:
- a PhD in medieval art history;
- an international reputation in the field of medieval art history;
- the ability to establish productive connections with other academic disciplines within as well as outside the department;
- research matching one of the Faculty’s research priority areas;
- an excellent academic publication record;
- an extensive national and international network with other academic and cultural institutions;
- an experienced and enthusiastic teacher;
- experience in developing new teaching programs;
- a proven track record of acquiring external research funding;
- proven management capacities;
- a fluent command of both Dutch and English or s/he will acquire this level of linguistic competence within two years of taking up the position.

Benefits: The initial appointment will be on a
temporary basis for a period of no more than two years. Subject to satisfactory
performance, this will be turned into a permanent contract. The gross salary
will normally conform to max. € 82.000,- per year on a full-time basis in
accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO
NU).
