The Courant Research Centre "EDRIS - Education and Religion from Early Imperial Roman Times to the Classical Period of Islam" at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen currently invites applications for

one full-time post-doctoral research position (also available as two half-time PhD positions)

and one half-time PhD research position.

EDRIS is one of seven interdisciplinary Courant Research Centres recently established by the University of Göttingen as part of its institutional strategy "Tradition - Innovation - Autonomy". The objective of the Centre is to investigate educational concepts and methods and their interaction with religious beliefs from the Early Imperial Period of the Roman Empire to the Classical Period of Islam, i.e. from the first to the thirteenth century CE. Interdisciplinary collaborative work at the Courant Research Centre will be carried out by three junior research groups, which will focus on three closely interrelated areas of study. For further information about the Courant Research Centre EDRIS, please visit our web site at www.uni-goettingen.de/crc-edris.

The positions will be part of the junior research group "Education at the Crossroads: Pagan, Christian and Jewish Discourses in Late Antiquity" (4th-9th century CE), which proposes to analyse the various forms of religious education in Late Antiquity. Initially the group will focus on the theme "Education and Religion : Ideals, Media, Identity", while at a later stage research on educational institutions and structures is envisaged.

Excellent young researchers will be provided with the opportunity to propose and pursue individual research projects within the framework of the Research area. Applications from relevant disciplines such as Classics, History, Jewish Studies, History of Religions, Theology (e.g. Patristic Studies) or Philosophy are welcome. The successful candidates will have a strong research background demonstrated by an excellent MA or equivalent degree for the PhD positions, resp. a doctorate for the post-doctoral position. Interest in interdisciplinary work is essential. Permanent presence in Göttingen is expected, in order to ensure active scholarly interaction among the research groups of the Centre.

The positions will start as soon as possible and initially last for two years with the possibility of extension. Salaries are in accordance with the German state regulated public service salary scale (E 13 TV-L, 50% E 13 TV-L, respectively). International applications are welcome. The University of Göttingen actively seeks to foster career opportunities for female scholars and therefore strongly encourages qualified women to apply. Candidates with disabilities who are equally qualified for the position will receive special consideration.

Applications can be uploaded to the online portal by January 15th, 2010 (24.00 hrs local time Göttingen, Germany). Full contact and application information can be found within the portal link.
