2 Research Positions in Late Antique Christianity

A team of scholars of the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) consisting of members of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, the Faculty of Arts, and the Institute of Philosophy, has recently been granted funding for a research project on ‘From Chaos to Order – The Creation of the World. New Views on the Reception of Platonic Cosmogony in Later Greek Thought, Pagan and Christian’. The team will study various aspects of this reception history. The two colleagues of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies are inviting applications for 2 research fellowships on, respectively, John Chrysostom’s Homilies in Genesim and Anastasius the Sinaite’s Commentary on Genesis.

Candidates will have obtained competence in Late Antique Christianity and/or Biblical Exegesis on an MA level. A very good command of Greek is indispensable, as is the ability to combine historical and exegetical methods in an interdisciplinary way. Proven experience in comparable research projects is a plus. We are especially inviting candidates with an MA in Theology or Religious Studies, but candidates with an MA degree in related disciplines (Ancient Philology, History of Ancient Philosophy, et al.) are also strongly invited to apply.

The successful candidate will be able to work in a team. S/he is expected to write a doctoral dissertation (PhD Religious Studies or Dr.Theol. – STD) on one of the 2 topics mentioned above. Candidates will be hired for four years. The starting date is negotiable, but should preferably be before July 1, 2013. Applicants should be fluent in at least one of the following international languages (English, French, German).

The net salary is approx. €1800/month; in addition the fellowship provides for basic social benefits and health insurance. Candidates may wish informally to contact (one of) the two directors of the sub-project for further information. Please write to either Prof. Dr. Johan Leemans (johan.leemans@theo.kuleuven.be) or Prof.  Dr. Joseph Verheyden (jos.verheyden@theo.kuleuven.be).

Applications should include the candidate’s CV, a personal letter with motivation statement, one writing sample (excerpt from MA dissertation, an essay or article), and two letters of recommendation. These should be sent to the following addresses:

Prof. Dr. Johan Leemans
Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies
St-Michielsstraat 4/3101
B-3000 Leuven
Belgium

or

Prof. Dr. Joseph Verheyden
Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies
St-Michielsstraat 4/3101

The deadline for submitting applications is January 30, 2013. All candidates will receive confirmation of their application and will be contacted after a decision has been made.
